We all benefit from moderate sun exposure, it’s good for our health and it’s actually necessary for optimal bodily functions. However, the overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays is what can cause us problems and this is what we need to protect ourselves from. Our body needs the sun to produce vitamin D, an essential vitamin for our overall health, but we also have to make sure we’re protected from the harm, so it’s best to use a non-toxic sunscreen to prevent sunburns. The best sunscreen for this is coconut oil or some low-risk type that is free of toxic ingredients.
According to the author of numerous health guidebooks, Bruce Fife, coconut oil can really protect our skin from sunburns and cancer, but it doesn’t completely block the UVB sunrays which we need to synthesize vitamin D. It works in such a way that it protects all the underlying tissues from the sun and prevents the skin from burning, we get a light tan instead.
If we add zinc oxide to the coconut oil we get a full-spectrum sunscreen that can protect us from the UVA and UVB rays. But still be careful as nothing can protect you from overexposure to the sun.
The zinc oxide you’ll use should be high-quality and a specially designed formula for the cosmetic industry. When you mix it up with the sunscreen use a mask so that you prevent accidental inhalation of the dust particles. The mineral, when applied on the skin, will leave behind a white shade on your skin as it can not be completely absorbed by the skin.
Below you’ll find a recipe for a homemade sunscreen which can be used by your entire family. It’s made out of completely natural ingredients, oils and butter, all of which are beneficial for your skin. All of the ingredients can be found online or in your local health store. We recommend you prepare it and try it out, as it provides excellent protection from the sun and is also beneficial and free of toxins and chemicals. You can choose the essential oils you prefer to add to the sunscreen, just make sure they’re not citrus oils as they can cause skin burning.
Homemade Natural Sunscreen with Coconut Oil
- ¼ cup of shea butter
- ¼ cup of coconut oil
- beeswax granules
- 1/8 cup of jojoba or sesame oil
- 1 or 2tbsp. zinc oxide (if you want extra protection)
- Essential oils per your choosing (rosemary, lavender, vanilla, peppermint)
- 20-30 drops of raspberry seed oil
Heat up the shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax and jojoba or sesame oil in a small pot until they’re melted. Once they’re melted and combined set the pot aside and leave it to cool down until they get to room temperature. Now would be a good time to add the zinc oxide if you want to, and stir to combine, don’t worry about the lumps if they form, you’ll break them up later. Store the mixture in the refrigerator for about half an hour, just when it’s about to set but still soft enough so that you can whip it. Now take it out of the fridge and start whipping it. Add the raspberry oil and the essential oils and whip it until it becomes light and fluffy.
You can use this sunscreen as you would use any sunscreen, apply it generously on your skin when exposed to the sun. Make sure you reapply it when staying in the sun for longer. Keep it in the fridge when not using it.
